Weekend mag: Hanger magazine SS12

It's been quite a while since I've posted something worthwhile, especially reading-wise. As you know I am not a person who reads magazines on a monthly basis, save for a few selected titles like Monocle and back issues of the wonderful British publications like 10 Magazine and Fantastic Man. It has been quite a struggle to search for quality local publications ever since.

But it seems that Malaysia has seen quite a few buds of talented fashion journalism and therefore, publication. Hanger magazine is one of the rare breeds that lights up the dull Malaysian fashion journalism scene.

I would say that the content veers more towards street fashion based on its first few editions. However its Spring Summer 12 issue seems to expand topic-wise and therefore covering different niches like emerging international designers (most of which are new to my knowledge, quite naturally), regional street fashion photography and a good set of editorials. There is also a sporadic spread of interviews which give a more in-depth behind-the-scene coverage on a new product or label...

In trend?

I am sure there are lots of girls out there who cherish their personal stash of fashion-related magazines, and use them as one of the more accessible means for a quick information on all beauty related, trends and what not. On the other hand I must honestly say that I am not a regular reader of such publications.  I will leave that to my sisters, I suppose.

But that does not mean that I don't feel honoured to see Dunia Fashyon being published as one of the 65 blogs to watch in the March publication of the Malaysian magazine Intrend. This definitely borders on shameless self-promotion but where else can you find 65 blogs of different niches being collaged together in a five-page spread or so?

Entry number 202

Yes you read that right! I have reached my two hundred and second entry for Dunia Fashyon. Who would have known that I have managed to perpetuate the existence of my blog this far. And who would have known that my love for fashion has not abated - it only grows stronger.

I'd like to dedicate this celebratory entry to menswear, as it is what the blog is mainly about. So summer is almost ending and here I am musing about Spring/Summer 2011. Ah the pertinent tardiness in me. Anyhow, I just love these wonderful images (but crappily taken by moi) from WFM +Men, a male-mode magazine showcasing runway looks in Milan and Paris for each and every season. I discovered this magazine all in its half-priced glory at my favorite off-season magazine outlet Sun in Sungei Wang.

WFM is a Hong Kong-based company that stocks fashion magazines from womenswear (including bridal-wear and couture) to men's lifestyle mags and even interior designing and far-off subjects like finance. It also publishes more obscure things in fashion that many people might be interested in, but do not have the proper access to - the close-up series. These individual series focus on detailed shots of outerwear, shirts, formal wear, knits, pants and jeans. The coverage itself is simply astounding! But of course then again print publications are having a constant threat by their online counterparts and that is another topic altogether.

Oh, I probably should shut up already and just enjoy the images. The following are my favorite collections this season...

Hanger Magazine AW 2010 Launch Party

Last night saw the launching party of biannual streetwear fashion magazine Hanger  for their AW 2010/2011 issue. It was hosted by none other than the boisterous  PR extraordinaire Amri Rahim. A magazine under the JUICE publication, currently this is the third issue of Hanger. Its main focus is street fashion;  the current issue boasts editorials by local stylists with majority of clothing curated by Malaysian designers.

It is such a rare occasion that I attend such launch parties (thanks to my day job of course). I was honestly excited by how the attendees were fashionably dressed - we're talking about all sorts of styles imaginable here; from the preppy and dandy  downright to androgynous and experimental. It was such an eclectic mix of crowd!

The party was set at the fabulous Hex Sensory Room, in Menara Mustapa Kamal - I can't stop gushing at the minimalistic / eco-friendly aesthetics of the building in general

Outfit-wise, I did not really oblige to the 'Hot in the City' theme that night. My outfit was basically a random mishmash of things that I gathered for the past 2 years.

I was wearing a thrifted patchwork shirt (customised from a very baggy woman's size), Beyond Retro Stockholm bow tie, Topman khaki pants, vintage shoes from Paris, socks from Happy Socks by Wong Wong, Muji cotton kimono/cape and Kipling x Peter Pilotto bag.

And the new addition to the bag family is the Kipling x Peter Pilotto messenger, which is a recent find that I acquired at 60% off the retail price. Officially I'm quite a satisfied consumer after purchasing it - the plastic bangles print and the vibrant colors just made me hooked to using it everyday HAHA.

We ended the night by dancing away to techno and the occasional R&B. Here's hoping to attending more fashion-related events, if my day job permits that is...

The Learning Curve in Footwear Selection

I'm learning step by step to veer towards more 'tasteful' selection in footwear (read: less sporty, more dress up shoes).Although this may sound a little bit hypocritical considering the fact that I just posted my plimsolls pics (however, I consider them the least sporty of sneakers out there), allow me to say my taste in shoes have changed dramatically within the duration of one year - my initial inclination towards more sporty kicks since childhood have been replaced by the affinity of well-built leather footwear :loafers,driver shoes, oxfords etc.

Adidas Originals : Moscow

Yes, I will still keep and wear those sneakers partly due to their versatility and wearibility. Frankly speaking I simply can't afford to lose them though- as every clothing item of mine have a special place in my consumerist heart. Take for example a pair of Adidas Moscow trainers that I bought last year...I'm not planning to wear them, instead I'll be keeping them nicely as a memento of my SIX pleasant/shitty years spent in Russia.

But I digress.

Lately "proper" shoes have been my latest obsession du jour (oh while we're at it let's make an obsession d'annee). I've been drooling over the images of shoes on the net, and yet again it's another blog-worthy images from AnOther Man e-magazine that wins my heart over. The champions which can easily rip off my imaginary thick wallet are these Lanvin two-tone brogues and colourful tasseled loafers from Gucci, bien sur! (the first two pics respectively)

I don't want to try to express my sentiment for these shoes since I obviously lack the writing skills to do so. Petty as it may sound, not to mention ridiculous - how can a person have an affection for non-living objects like shoes?... let the following images help me convey my feelings for these little accessories that can really make an outfit!

Well these shoes are certainly the ones that I can't afford just yet. Meanwhile let me prance about in my heavily discounted Zara lace-ups!

Towering accessories

This might be stale news on fashyonnn blogosphere but I've been amazed by AnOther Man SS09 issue (it's equally rivaled by its archetypal sister journal AnOther Magazine with the wonderful Tilda Swinton editorials). Well if it was not because of the freebie online edition I would not even notice that such a quality magazine existed! Apparently it's under the umbrella publishing company Dazed Group - they publish Dazed and Confused (yeah you guess it right).

The content is carefully thought after without too much 'commercial labels' ad getting in the way (re: more editorials, less shitty articles ehem, Conde Nast publications). I love most of the editorials especially the TOWERS - okay, I don't know if this counts as an editorial if it's a showcase of a handful of accessories, upside down. At the risk of sounding like a 10 year old, I want to say HOW COOL IS THAT? Thanks to my non-observant eyes, I've been scratching my head for a few minutes or so to figure out how they did the special effect....

P/S: These past few days instead of studying AND blogging I've been spending way much time on Helmi's shiny Xbox 360 (bought during his trip to UK ehem). First there's Guitar Hero Special Edition (Aerosmith) - I don't even like rock THAT much but playing for 3-4 hours non stop kind of unearthed the inner guitarist in me :).... Then there's the addictive Lips where I sang loads of unfamiliar songs that I subconsciously managed to catch the melody from hours and hours of off-tune screaming (not singing, mind you).

Thank you Helmi, Yat and Mozac for the perpetual hospitality. I think I should come again tomorrow, no?

I'm Dazed and Confused!

Russia will get its own Dazed and Confused !!!!!!

I've been dreaming for this moment so I can lay my mitts on this mag. It's not that I know a lot of stuff about fash mags but trust me, this is one of the best and least commercial magazines (ehemm.. Vogue/Elle) out there.

The above pic is the sample cover of the pilot issue. The first issue ever will be published later next year. In case you're wondering the model (pictured above) is Russia's own Sasha Pivovarova.

Russia already has its own versions of Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and all the big guns in publication, and now this? I nearly shat my panties y'all! It's funny that even fashion capitals like Pagheee and NY don't even have their own Dazed and Confused (the only international edition to date is Tokyo)
